KMess is an alternative Live Messenger chat client for Linux. It allows Linux users to chat with friends who use Live Messenger in Windows or Mac OS. The strength of KMess is it's integration with the KDE desktop environment, it focus on Messenger-specific features and an easy-to-use interface. Messenger for Linux was quite popular 10 years ago when it was available for the Red Hat 9 Linux and Debian GNU/Linux 3 distributions, providing users with the same features that were available on. If you are a command-line junkie geek by day but have ‘normal' friends by night, that you chat to via messenger.com or via the Facebook Messenger app on your phone, you might be delighted to find out that having to stop what you are doing, bashing away at the terminal and go to your browser can be a thing of the past.
The Facebook Messenger Client is also available for MacOS, Linux, and Windows operating system. You can install and use all Facebook messenger features from your Desktops application. This tutorial will help you to download and install Facebook messenger client on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, 17.04 & 16.04 LTS systems.
You can download the Facebook Messenger application for your Ubuntu system directly from its Github releases pages. Click on below image to open Github page and download the Debian package (.dpkg) file as per your operating systme architecture.
The downloaded file save under ~/Downloads directory on my system. Change the current directory to Downloads and install Facebook messenger application debian package using dpkg command.
The last command is only required to install any unmet dependencies for the application.
Launch the Facebook messenger application from Applications as shown in below screenshot.
Now use your Facebook login details to log in to messenger application and enjoy its features.
Kaidan is a simple, user-friendly chat client that uses the open communication protocol XMPP (Jabber) and runs on Linux, Mac OS, Android, Plasma Mobile and Ubuntu Touch.
The software is written in C++ with Qt and the Qt-based XMPP library QXmpp. Unlike other chat apps, you are not dependent on one specific service provider.
Kaidan features: supported XEPs / RFCs and planned XEPs. The latest release so far is Kaidan 0.5 that contains QR code scanning and generation, message search, and more.

For Linux, grab the .appimage package, make executable in file's Properties > Permissions. And finally run it to launch the chat app.

Irssi is one of the oldest open source IRC chat clients that can be run in a terminal. It can be customized using modules, user scripts and themes.
